Graduate Diploma in Pathology

Duration - Minimum 1 year (2 sem), maximum 4 years part-time (8 sem)

This 1-year full-time or up to 4-years part-time graduate diploma course is offered internally at the Hobart campus. The staff are: Dr S Bettiol (co-ordinator), and other staff from the School of Medicine and Royal Hobart Hospital Pathology Department. Assessment is by examination, the completion of a minor research report, seminar presentations.

The Graduate Diploma in Pathology is a course that considers the pathological processes, their interrelationships and emphasis on clinicopathological correlation. These units relate to the acquisition of knowledge and skills in the clinical utilisation of Haematology, Chemical Pathology, Immunology and Medical Microbiology.

The objectives of the Graduate Diploma in Pathology:

  1. To advance student knowledge in Clinical Haematology and Chemical Pathology or Immunology and Medical Microbiology.
  2. To develop the advanced knowledge and skills required to function as specialists in a chosen field of Clinical Haematology or Chemical Pathology or Immunology or Medical Microbiology.
  3. To provide a greater understanding of the clinical relevance and significance of pathology testing by expanding on the scientific basis of the chosen area acquired through an undergraduate degree.
  4. To provide other appropriate health professionals opportunities to advance their own practice and knowledge in their chosen field.
  5. To give candidates advanced theoretical knowledge in the above areas to enable them to undertake further postgraduate studies in these disciplines.
