Environmental Studies

Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma

These courses encourage postgraduate students, with a wide range of backgrounds and interests, to apply their existing skills to environmental problems and issues, and develop new skills and modes of thought.

Environmental Studies will provide the knowledge and skills for students to contribute to sustainable environmental management and can lead to outstanding career opportunities.

Graduates in Environmental Studies work in a range of positions including: education as teachers and lecturers; research; public service (in planning, health, tourism, forestry, national parks, environment, transport, energy, harbours and marine and water management), and in the private sector as energy managers, consultant engineers and environmental planners.


Graduate Certificate of Environmental Studies

Duration - Minimum 0.5 years (1 sem), maximum 2 years (4 sem)

The Graduate Certificate is aimed at environmental professionals desiring a short-commitment postgraduate course to augment their undergraduate degree and enhance their career opportunities. At the completion of the course, students will:

  • have expanded their knowledge about the values of natural and cultural environments, the biophysical attributes of natural areas, the cultural, political, legal, institutional and social contexts in which natural environments are located and managed, the role and contribution of planning for maintaining natural and cultural values and the methods used to address issues associate with biodiversity conservation and cultural heritage management;
  • have developed a range of professional skills including - defining problems and formulating objectives for natural and cultural environments, understanding policy formulation, evaluation and implementation, making plans and using planning instrument; and
  • have developed a professional ethic in which they are able to integrate value issues and critically evaluate the use of professional knowledge, skills and communication.



Graduate Diploma of Environmental Studies

Duration - Minimum 1 year (2 sem), maximum 3 years (6 sem)

The Graduate Diploma in Environmental Studies is specifically designed for those with a tertiary qualification, who wish to gain a first qualification in Environmental Studies.

It is appropriate for those wishing to make a career change to an environmental management area, for those wishing to combine environmentally based skills with their current specialisation, or for those who wish to increase their knowledge out of interest.

The course provides a broad, interdisciplinary approach to environmental management, and articulates with the Masters of Environmental Management.
